Resilience, Entrepreneurship & The Birth of Terrace Plant Shop

Pete Dario

The entrepreneurial journey is often a rollercoaster ride filled with ups and downs, successes and failures. In our recent podcast episode, we had the pleasure of hosting Pete Dario, an inspiring Filipino-American entrepreneur who successfully navigated a unique journey from a young spirit flipping candy bars, to the proud owner of Terrace Plant Shop.

Pete’s entrepreneurial spirit was passed down to him from his mother, an immigrant from the Philippines who was always trying to make a buck in her home country. He inherited her hustle and, as a young teenager, started flipping candy bars to his friends. He later took an apprenticeship in a barbershop, a venture that marked the beginning of his business journey.

However, Pete’s first venture, Culture Connect, faced several challenges that led to its eventual failure. It was a creative organization that focused on content marketing for restaurants. But, being a young entrepreneur, Pete struggled with managing client expectations and dealing with confrontation. He was constantly pushed around, which led to him losing interest in the business. He labeled Culture Connect as a failure, not due to a lack of financial success, but because he felt he wasn’t meeting the expectations of his clients.

This failure, however, didn’t deter Pete. Instead, it instilled in him the importance of resilience and the mantra of failing fast. He used this experience to pivot and embark on a new venture, Terrace Plant Shop, with a renewed mindset.

The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic proved to be a challenging yet transformative period for Pete. With his family falling ill and the loss of his father and grandfather, Pete found solace in nature. He took his mother, a former farmer in the Philippines, to a nursery which sparked an idea. This was the genesis of Terrace Plant Shop.

Pete’s journey with Terrace Plant Shop wasn’t smooth sailing either. He faced issues with client expectations again, this time over a large plant delivery. However, the lessons he learned from his previous business failures helped him navigate these issues more effectively.

Pete’s entrepreneurial journey serves as a testament to the power of resilience, the importance of failing fast, and the necessity of learning from failures. His experiences provide valuable insights for anyone in the sphere of business. From understanding how to handle customer interactions, to recognizing the potential of referrals, and even the significance of quality soil for houseplants, Pete’s story offers nuggets of wisdom.

In conclusion, the journey of Pete Dario is a prime example of how resilience, innovation, and the willingness to learn from failures can lead to success. It’s a compelling tale of personal growth, overcoming life’s challenges, and navigating the intricate world of entrepreneurship. Whether you’re an aspiring entrepreneur, a plant lover, or just someone seeking an inspiring story, Pete Dario’s journey will undoubtedly captivate you.
